Professor Ricardo Velásquez and National Qualifier, Shawn Haq at Fullerton High

West Los Angeles NSDA District Tournament

(March 28-30)

Professor Velásquez worked intently with the team all year long in its ongoing preparation for Student Congress, and it paid off at the end of the year. Marlon Poroj, who had been the team’s most consistent winner all year in Congress gave a good showing at the National Qualifier Competition, and was on par with a couple of his year-long competitors from other schools. However, it was the somewhat lesser known Shawn Haq who pounced on the scene and grabbed one of only two seats available in the Senate, out a field of 16 competitors. With a 5.1 magnitude earthquake literally striking a mere five miles away during the competition, one can surely say that Shawn was part of a shake-up up on this evening in March.
