West Los Angeles NSDA District Tournament
(March 27-29, 2015)
Up against the top competitors from a district that comprises of two elite leagues from the Los Angeles area, El Camino Real students did an outstanding job this weekend. In the Senate of the Student Congress competition, Marlon Poroj went up against twenty competitors, many of whom have won a long list of awards in their own right. From this tough field, only the top two are awarded spots in the upcoming national competition in June hosted by the National Speech & Debate Association. Marlon secured one of those coveted positions when he tied for first with one of the top debaters in the country! Over in the House, where 44 tough competitors matched wits, Gabriel Salazar finished first and earned the only national bid that comes from that competition. Shawn Haq also did quite well, coming in second and earning the “alternate” designation. However, Shawn would not be denied his trip to Nationals. The following day in the National Extemporaneous event, Shawn beat out last year’s national champion in Impromptu and grabbed the one bid from that field of 16 debaters.
