Tri-County Forensic League: Debate State Qualifier

A total of 38 teams entered the the Parliamentary Debate State Qualifier competition this year and El Camino itself was responsible for three of those entries. By the middle of the second day of the competition, Shawn Haq and Emily Mercer were the only El Camino competitors left in the double-elimination tournament. In their last rounds they had to battle some of the top-ranked debaters/speakers in California and the nation. Although they could not crack that
elite level, their overall performance over the two day-event earned them one of the five spots allocated to the Tri-County Forensic League in the California High School Speech Association 2015 State Tournament. One year ago, Shawn and Emily were El Camino’s top team in this state qualifier, ending up in 14th place and one win away from the Finals round. It was great to see them persevere the second time around and earn a trip to the state championship.
